Need information to support your action against the Iraq War? Here is a list of information and resources. Feel free to post comments about how useful (or not) it is.
From Paul Krugmann’s talk in SF on September 11, some “Harper’s Index style” stats:
- Total cost of Iraq war so far: $0.5 trillion ($500 billion)
- Amount we could have paid every Iraqi citizen instead: $20,000
- Cost of Iraq War, per month: $10,000,000,000
- Cost of providing one year of health care for all U.S. children: $10,000,000,000
- Average cost per U.S. taxpayer, per year: $400
Web resources:
- http://www.costofwar.com (hosted by the National Priorities Project) has running tallies of the cost of the war, total and broken down by state and congressional district. It also compares the cost to more positive endeavors, like building homes or child health care.
- http://www.iraqbodycount.org/ (IBC) provides running counts of Iraqi dead. They only count deaths that are corroborated from multiple sources, so their estimate is regarded by many analysts as very low. Even IBC says it “… has not recorded all deaths, therefore its total is an undercount” but it defends its count as being in the ballpark. Other analysts say IBC’s count is only a tiny fraction of the actual count.
- http://www.icasualties.org/oif/ (Iraq Coalition Casualty Count) counts deaths of U.S. and coalition service members, and also has a time-ordered, up-to-date list of all official U.S. service deaths since the U.S. invaded Iraq: http://icasualties.org/oif/US_NAMES.aspx.
- http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/casualties/ (CNN) lists military deaths by date and by name, with photos and info about age, hometown, and details of death.
