On May 18 2010, a sad milestone was achieved: 1000 US military personal have died in Afghanistan since “Operation Enduring Freedom” — the operation’s grossly false name — was begun in October 2001. Since May 18, another 81 US military personnel have died.
That tally does not include fatalities of troops from the UK and other NATO countries. Adding those brings the total 1778. The tally also excludes CIA and private “security contractors”; those numbers are not available.
